Inertia increases when flywheels are added to a shaft to increase the kinetic energy stored in rotating parts, thereby buffering a rapid pump shutdown. Pumps have tended to get smaller and smaller (with less inertia) and lighter, multistage vertical pumps are used more frequently. This has tended to make this option far less common.
